  Have island - will travel!

How would you like to have an exclusive Carribean island as your client? All you have to do is visit once in a while and make sure the publicity is tastefully done and your target audience gets to know about you. Oh yes, if you don’t actually own a multi- million dollar villa, you can rent one starting at $5,000 – $75,000 per week, and there are no family package plans or charter flights from major airports.

Peter Wootton had such a dream account, and that’s just one of the highlights of a long career in graphic arts, advertising and photography.

“I was Art Director for The island of Mustique for fifteen years,” explains Peter, “and it’s really quite unique. It’s a private island for the rich, royalty and celebrities. The original owner, Lord Glenconner, gave Princess Margaret a plot in 1960 as a wedding present, and over the years it has developed into a very special place for celebrities and people seeking privacy from photographers.”

Peter is the Creative Director and Partner for Adult Lifestyle Communities, but his background after a lifetime in the graphic arts makes for interesting reading.

“I was always interested in creative stuff,” explains Peter. “My Dad was something of an artisan and always making things: carving, marquetry, working with leather – that sort of thing. I left school earlier than most kids my age. I had several jobs before I was accepted at the Leeds College of Art where I studied graphic design, and while at college I developed a love for photography.”

Once out of college, Peter found the need to make a living took over and he managed to find a job at a design firm in his hometown, working on a variety of accounts from supermarket ads to packaging and display work.

“Few people hold one job for a lifetime in our business,” Peter says. “Its no shame to have dodged from one job to another as you work in the graphic arts field. I was no exception.

I longed to get into television, so I simply barged into the studios of Yorkshire Television one day and asked to leave a package for the art director. I brought along a creative piece hoping to impress the art director but security was tight as the IRA was carrying out bombing attacks in Britain at the time. They told me there was no way I was leaving the package, but finally relented after looking inside it. I didn’t get a job that day but it gave me self-confidence to keep on looking.”

Peter did use the idea, sending it to the managing director of a large Advertising Agency, and this time did get a job. He worked on a number of large national accounts and gained valuable experience, but he was restless and needed new challenges.

His world changed when he and his new wife visited Canada in 1974 for holiday that was to change their lives. They emigrated the following year and settled down in Oshawa. Eventually Peter met Bryan Mills in 1980, and went to work for the Bryan Mills Group. He was a partner in the firm for over 25 years, working on annual report and brochures for a number of leading Canadian corporations, and it was here he had his dream assignment as art director for the island of Mustique.

After Peter and Bryan left the BMG group they teamed up to start the Adult Lifestyle Communities.ca website two years ago and Peter became one of the founding partners. “Through all these years I’ve kept up my passion for photography,” says Peter, “and I am always out there looking for new inspiration.

Peter is a fine art photographer with his own site at peterwootton.ca
